SYMPTOMS Signs and Symbolism in Medical Discourse Whether it is regarded as disease or illness, whether it occurs in a society practicing biomedicine or a culture practicing indigenous medicine, sickness is universal. Diseases and illnesses of all types plague each and every society throughout the world. Central to the idea of sickness is the diagnostic element of the symptom. Although many cultures have unique ideologies regarding sickness, healing, and efficacy, these cultures use the symptom as the primary instrument to maintain their culturally constructed idea of health. Regardless of the healing system or society, globally, people tend to use the symptom as a tool to communicate illness to the appropriate medical practitioner. In seeking the healing action of practitioners and the advice of friends and family, the sick communicate their symptoms as a way of receiving social legitimization for their illness. Thus, symptoms are also used by the sick to gain legitimization of the sick role from society. Just as culture is integrated in the beliefs and behaviors of every society, symptoms are deeply embedded in the concept of sickness and healing. Symptoms add clarity to the complex ideas of sickness and healing in such a way that it is difficult to discuss either process without touching on these symbols. The symptom is regarded as a vital part of the illness experience because it offers insight into the physiological and psychological aspects of the patient’s body. In this way, the symptom symbolizes the roots of a tree, anchoring a societal understanding of medical knowledge and healing etiologies. Therefore, it is the purpose of this paper to explore the significance of symptoms and determine their centrality to a culture’s ideas of sickness and healing. Related topics such as the symptom’s significance in the process of social legitimization of illness and its symbolic nature will serve to supplement and support the argument that symptoms ar e, in fact, central in the process of healing. Definition and Importance of the Symptom Due to the intricacy of the symptom, it is difficult to construct a simple definition. Illness symptoms are â€Å"differently labeled by individuals in dissimilar social situations† (Browner 1983: 494).

The portrayal of death in the poems connote the poet’s feeling that life is futile; these themes combine to present Heaney’s feelings on life and loss. Primarily, Heaney portrays the demise of his childhood in â€Å"Mid Term Break†, clearly presenting his dejected, sullen and resigned feelings towards life in the event of loss. The image of time and death in stanza one, â€Å"I sat all morning†¦counting bells knelling†¦at two o’clock† clearly show his sense of logical reminiscence during a particularly morbid time in his life. The juxtaposition of the morning and the symbolic death bells represent the premature end to his brother’s life and the destruction of his own childhood. This shows sullen resignation towards the event of loss in his life. This childhood demise is also presented in DOAN. However, Heaney presents this in a more dramatic manner. Stanza one is longer than the second stanza, presenting how the poet revelled in his days of innocence. It also contains a tone of mystery and natural wealth, â€Å"bubbles gargled delicately, bluebottles/wove a strong gauze of sound†¦Ã¢â‚¬  through the use of synesthetic verbs to personify nature, Heaney portrays his nostalgic feelings towards this period of childhood innocence. This is emphasised through enjambment, which creates a sense of freedom. The demise of this is seen through the tonal shift, â€Å"then one hot day† in stanza two, moving the reader into the harshness of his adulthood. The contrast in language is also evidence of this, it becoming grotesque and fearful, â€Å"gross bellied†¦ obscene threats†¦farting heads†¦mud grenades.† Connotations of war, vengeance and threat are apparent, depicting his childhood demise through his negative perceptions of nature. Thus, it is clear from both pieces that Heaney has varied views on life and loss. In MTB the reader learns of his confusion and resignation as a result of his experience of death. However, DOAN presents a metaphorical depiction of how childhood is lost as a result of the harsh and oppressive adult world.

Introduction Gender stereotypes begin to shape when preconceptions are formed through characteristics or attributes that ought to be possessed by either a man and woman. It begins to limit choices about individual daily lives and goals, referring to the specific attributes gender is widely expected to have. Norms are social expectations that guide human behavior and many norms in the society are set to obligate how genders are supposed to act. To stop gender stereotyping, the International Human Rights Law placed a legal obligation on states. The law obligated required states to address gender stereotypes both publicly and privately. This was set in place because most gender stereotypes became harmful within the society and created hostile or negative reactions towards a gender. The goal is to further understand sexism and how it is formed within the society of unwanted sexual encounters, while displaying the stereotypes it creates. Sexism is seen as a a prejudice look on gender roles that creates stereotypes. It is the belief that natural behavior, psychological behavior and intellectual behavior each have differences between man or woman (Dahl). This deals with the inferiority of one group and superiority of another. The stereotypes create societal roles, affecting women the most. This causes women to become socialized into the category of expressive roles that are both nurturing and emotionally supportive. In 1732, Franklin started the newspaper Philadelphische Zeitung. Up to 1734 he was a prominent person in Pennsylvania and for the first time he published the first book, reprinting of James Anderson’s The Constitution of the Free Masons. He wanted to became a high quality writer which would be renowned for his works. He spent his many years in England and made known his famous Poor Richard’s Almanac and the Pennsylvania. In his these books he used his writing skills and cited many proverbs which got famous from that time. These proverbs are used today also. He formed a public lending library and fire department in America. He was against many political steps like Iron Act in 1750, the Albany Plan of Union in 1754, but favored the stand for paper money as currency. He was acknowledged as a national hero in America at that time when he went forward to oppose the parliament to put down the Stamp Act. He also became a minister and went to Paris where he was respected comprehensively by the French people. Later in his life he became the Postmaster General and was the President of the Supreme Executive Council. He made great efforts to contribute in the American Revolution. But real fact is that when Benjamin Franklin was flying a kite, his main goal was to prove the electrical nature of lightening. Hi kite just picked up the stray charges which cause the phenomenon of stray capacitance. If his kite got struck with the lightening, he might be killed at that instant. He discovered the nature of charge in the lightening and thus discovered the electricity. Many people wanted eagle to be the symbol, but the bald eagle was accepted as national symbol of America. These myths were also related with the Benjamin Franklin. He was not agreed upon the bald eagle to be a symbol of a nation. It did not seem good for having bald eagle as the symbol of a nation as according to the Benjamin Franklin. But in his letter to his daughter Sally on January 26, 1784(The Eagle, Ben Franklin, and the Turkey 1), he putted his doubt on using the Bald Eagle as the symbol for America. The statement pointed to the Benjamin Franklin â€Å"a penny saved is a penny earned† represents a myth which was broken later in the history. He wanted to utilize the money through the savings. Thus he was incorporated with the foundation of habit of saving. He was closely associated with saving the money and thought that saving money is the best method of earning. My Move from Vietnam to America Essay I was not thinking about one day that I should leave Vietnam and come to American to live. When I was in school, and that has happened to me on the September, 2010. My family had to move to U. S. to live with my grandparents. I have studied and worked in America for more than 4 years. Now, I still remember the first time that I came to U. S. , and I was 18 years old when I came to America. After more than 15 hours travel from Vietnam, my family has arrived to the U. S airport. It was 5. 00 PM in the afternoon. Everyone was tired, but I still wonder and excited with new country. We arrived to his office , there is a Vietnamese lady who work at this office, told us to show the document. After that, my family can get out the airport. My parents still worry about what was happen and keep asking about that. Next day, I wanted to go out and tried to met my neighbors. I thought it should be like in Vietnam where everybody in every house went out every morning and make fun conversation. I was shocked because I couldnt see even a person except me on the street, and I barely saw a car driving around my house area. I look around one turn, It seems like no one live here, it was so quiet , and Its not like my expected before I come to U. S.. I thought there was more fun and a lot of people walking on the street like I always watched on TV. I was surprised with the life of people around me. After five minutes, I saw my neighbor open his house door and went out. He was an American. He came to me and tried to communicate with me, but I was nervous. I ran too fast going to my house. My action was surprise him, He got stun like that he dont understand why I did that to him. He stay for a while and came back to his house. I stayed in home and felt sorry about my action. There are no place that I can go play or I can do something make me fun. People is just staying home even though this is weekend. I couldnt see a kid hang out with his friend like I did before in Vietnam. For a few day living in U. S, my exciting about new life had disappear. I wished that my family still stayed in Vietnam, where I spent 18 years to live. I missed my old house and bustling scene of people in my country. I stayed in my room and prayed to God . I hope some miracle will happen to me, so I can go back to Vietnam, but that is impossible right now. For a moment, I began to think why people is always desired to live in America while It did not seem like my expected. The life in U. S. at that time was terrible that such as a boring life. I stayed until the bell for next class rang, and I saw there were new student came to my class, I was surprise, so I asked my teacher. My teacher said that I have to go another class in another room, but I misunderstood her, I just shake my head like I understood her. I came back to my table and acted like nothing happen. The class started laughing at me, I felt so stupid and my face turn red. After that, my teacher called a student and took me to my next class. After everything happen to me, I was notice that language is the big trouble for me to live in the U. S.. I started to take more time to learn English. It took me about a year to learn how to understand English. When I can speak and write English, my life must be easier than before. After 4 years live in U. S.. My English skill is not perfect but It must be enough for me to communicate with people around me. Now Im still planning to go back to Vietnam, but that just for visit. United State of American is my second home. I fee fabulous with everything around me. I can say that America is for everyone, but they must understand English.
